My entrepreneurial journey began when I was just 14 years old, still in school, with an opportunity that, at the time, seemed like pure fun but turned out to be a profound learning experience.
Every year, our school organized a Diwali Mela, an event that would light up the entire campus with excitement and energy. Each class was given a kiosk to run, and the anticipation began almost a month before the big day. We would huddle together during free periods, brainstorming ideas about what we could sell. The possibilities felt endless—handmade items, snacks, fun games—we wanted to do it all!
The process itself was a rollercoaster of emotions. From planning budgets with whatever little pocket money we could pool together, to sourcing materials, designing posters, and even practicing our “sales pitch,” every step filled us with equal parts nervousness and thrill.
The real magic happened on the day of the mela. Standing at the kiosk, we didn’t just sell items; we sold excitement and experiences to every visitor who stopped by. Whether it was convincing complete strangers to buy tickets or upselling that last handmade bookmark, we learned the art of persuasion, negotiation, and customer service without even realizing it.
I still remember the pride of counting the day’s earnings with my classmates, calculating profits, and deciding how to distribute or reinvest them. Even the moments of chaos—like running out of change or facing a tough customer—taught us resilience and quick thinking.
Looking back, it was in those little kiosks that I got my first taste of marketing, sales, budgeting, profit distribution, and the sheer joy of creating something from scratch.
