Some moments in life define your path, not with a grand announcement, but with a quiet step into the unknown. I remember my first day after leaving my job. Nine transformative months I’d spent training under one of the country’s finest minds, absorbing wisdom that, at the time, felt beyond my grasp.
And then, I was on my own. Ground zero. No detailed roadmap, no certainty of what lay ahead. All I possessed was a laptop, a company name – 21DEGREES Advisory Services Private Limited– conjured from inspiration, and a simple idea.
It was 2017. I’d observed a misconception among many salaried individuals, particularly in government roles: the belief that if TDS was deducted, filing an ITR can be escaped. My heart went out to them, especially our hardworking police personnel.
So, one day, I headed to the Delhi Police Headquarters, then at ITO. My mission was straightforward: 21DEGREES would offer free tax awareness seminars for all personnel.
With newly printed visiting cards and a fledgling website, I went from one room to another. Every officer I met was kind and wanted to help, yet no one seemed to know how to facilitate a seminar for all police stations collectively. It wasn’t their direct domain.
For five straight days, I returned, seeking an answer, a viable path to serve our men in khaki.
On fifth day, while waiting for a ranking officer, someone walked by. He paused, looked at me, and said, “Ladke tu har roz yahan ke karna aa raha? Bohot din se dekh raha hu tujhe.”
I said: 21DEGREES wants to host free seminars to help DP plan their taxes, understand the importance of filing returns, and learn how to do it.
His reply was a simple, “Bas?”
To my surprise, I said, “Yes, sir.”
“Toh itne dino se ghoom kyun raha hai?.”
He took out a piece of paper and, right there, provided me with the details of 22 police stations in Delhi – names, numbers of SHOs, and his personal reference to use when I called them. He even guided me on the best times to visit – the ‘beat times’ (9-10 AM or 4-5 PM) when maximum officials would be present.
And just like that, a door didn’t just open; it was flung wide. 21DEGREES Advisory Services was presenting its first-ever ITR Awareness seminar to officials of the Delhi Police, capturing their attention and making them understand the necessity of keeping their financial records in order.
This journey taught some profound lessons:
